Frequently Asked Battery Questions
An AGM battery is a type of sealed lead-acid battery where the electrolyte is absorbed into a fiberglass mat (AGM = Absorbent Glass Mat). That design holds the acid in place, which makes AGM batteries spill-resistant, low-maintenance, and highly vibration-resistant—a big reason they’re common in modern vehicles, marine, RV, powersports, and backup power applications.
When people ask “what does AGM battery mean?”, it simply means the battery uses that glass-mat separator to immobilize the electrolyte. This allows AGM batteries to deliver strong starting power, recharge efficiently, and handle deeper cycling better than many traditional flooded lead-acid batteries (depending on the use case).
How long AGM batteries last depends on heat, charging system health, and how deeply they’re discharged. In typical automotive use, many AGM batteries land in the 3–6 year range, while deep-cycle applications vary widely based on cycle depth and charging habits.
A deep-cycle battery is a battery built to deliver steady power over a longer period and to be recharged and discharged repeatedly—unlike a starting (cranking) battery, which is designed for short bursts of power to start an engine. In plain terms, the deep cycle battery meaning is “endurance power”: it’s meant to run loads like electronics, accessories, and equipment for hours, not seconds.
What is a deep-cycle battery used for?
Deep-cycle batteries are commonly used in marine, RV, solar/off-grid, and golf cart applications—anywhere you need consistent output and frequent cycling.
Deep cycle vs. starting battery (quick difference):
Starting battery: high burst power for ignition; doesn’t like deep discharges.
Deep-cycle battery: continuous power + repeated cycling; designed to handle deeper discharges with less damage.
How long do deep-cycle batteries last?
Lifespan depends heavily on depth of discharge, charging quality, and heat—generally, the deeper you discharge it each cycle, the fewer total cycles you’ll get.
If you’re searching where to recycle old batteries, the simplest option (especially in Hamilton, Ontario) is to use Great Northern Battery Systems’ battery recycling program. Your batteries will be handled responsibly and kept out of landfills.

What batteries can I drop off?
GNB’s recycling program is for automotive and larger vehicle-related batteries, such as car, truck, and deep-cycle batteries.
If you’re unsure whether your battery qualifies, call GNB with the battery type and any label details (voltage, group size).
Safety steps before you transport batteries (important)
To reduce short-circuit/fire risk during transport:
-Tape the terminals (especially 9V and any battery with exposed contacts).
-Bag or separate loose batteries so they can’t touch each other.
Not sure what type of battery you have (AGM vs. deep-cycle vs. automotive)?
Use GNB’s Contact Us form and include:
– what it’s for (car, RV, marine, UPS, etc.)
– year/make/model (if applicable)
– any labels on the battery (voltage, group size)
To apply for a GNB wholesale account, go to the Wholesale page and complete the Wholesale Partner application form. Once submitted, GNB reviews your details and, if approved, you’ll receive access to wholesale pricing, account support, and order fulfillment.
